Monday 8th October - walk **** then travelling back to coast - sunny

We did our exercises and had our breakfast sitting in our lovely spot in the Gorges de la Frau:) We walked up the Gorge and were quite surprised at how steep the path was! We were expecting it to wind through the bottom of the gorge! It was quite a scramble but really beautiful with the overwhelming colour green from all the moss, ferns, grass and shrubs. We saw another possible eagle soaring over the cliffs at one stage. When we got to the top there was an intriguing road leading to a barrage but although we followed it for a bit we gave up because the road was going on and on and we hadn’t brought the lunch! Walked back down and had our lunch at the van. We were out nearly 3 hours. Set off for Axat which is one of a favourite small towns and we know we can get internet access by parking outside the Marie next to the river. This meant we could check the weather forecast and see if the expected wind for tomorrow was still coming! On the way we past the source de Fontestorbes – this looks like just a cave in a lay-by but it absolutely amazing – depending on the time of year the water fluctuates between a torrent and a trickle in an approximate 60-90 minute cycle! There were stepping stones leading across the water and into the cave so of course I had to put my wet shoes on and explore – the water at this time was flowing pretty fast and covered the stones by at least 2 to 3 inches but while I was in there it suddenly slowed right down and the stepping stones were out of the water! So Mag braved it and had a look herself. Inside the cave you could look up and see daylight but she didn’t venture in too far because the handrail was a bit dilapidated and she did graze my hand :) Did the internet thing at Axat and had a nice e-mail from Rob and Hannah for my birthday – they had a great time in the Gobi desert staying with Nomads and eating lots of mutton and fat!!! They are now in western Mongolia. Also had birthday messages from Shirley and Sharon (mentioning that it is 25 years today since mymum died – we had only spoken about it ourselves this over the weekend). Drove back to Sigean on the main road which is surprisingly beautiful and you get to see a lot of the Corbiere hills and even a couple of castles! Did the shopping at lidl as we got there just before closing time :) Parked up at our favourite spot at Sigean etang, had a tin of saucisson and lentils for tea and played phase 10:) Great day but very tired now but fingers crossed for tomorrow when we will met up with Pete and hope to sail!!!
